Broken iPod Screen:
Pay For An iPod Screen Repair, Or Replace It Entirely?
Broken iPod screens are not as expensive to repair as you might think. Regardless of the price, its always going to be cheaper than buying an entirely new device.
Dad and author of “cheapskate blog” Rick Broida was faced with a choice when his daughter dropped her 4th generation iPod touch: repair, or replace?
When faced with the possibility of repairing or replacing iphones, ipods, tablets etc, the cheapest option is always repairing the device.
The self-confessed “cheapskate” Broida was determined to cut costs however he could. So, he chose to repair the iPod – but repair it himself. Through Ebay, he found an iPod repair screen for only $12, with repair tools included.
When he went to repair the iPod however, he found that it was nearly impossible to repair the screen himself. Due to the design of the touch screen of the 4th gen iPod, he found that the glass was glued to the LCD beneath it. Only the glass was damaged, with the iPod still in working order. Yet he found online that it was virtually impossible to do an iPod screen repair by replacing only the glass.
Determined not to give up, Broida then purchased an LCD screen digitizer assembly. But when it came down to the repair, Broida found that despite hours of work, he was still unable to repair the iPod himself.
Despite following the advice of experts on youtube, Broida ended up wasting time and money. He found he was unable to carry out the iPod screen repair himself, and had to take it in to professionals to fix.
Yet, he did find that the cost of an iPod screen repair was far cheaper than the cost of a replacement – so the experiment wasn’t a total loss.
