Music Lovers Carry Out Old iPod Repairs Themselves,
Refuse To Use Music Streaming Services Instead
Fans of the classic iPod have taken to repairing their devices themselves instead of paying for expensive music streaming services.
Apple discontinued the classic iPod in 2014. Music aficionado’s however were unhappy with the decision, and still revere the benefits of having their entire music library easily accessible, without the need of costly data usage.
The classic iPod repairs industry is thriving, and proves that consumers still want to buy the iPod classic, despite it being discontinued.
Then of course there are the people who do not own smartphones – hard to believe, I know, but yes, they do exist! For these people, an iPod can be a necessity.
Relying on internet data can be considered a drawback to some music lovers, as not every streaming library essentially has everything. Also, the cost of constant data usage can get expensive, particularly when away from WiFi.
The tech industry however disagrees. They preach the benefits of music streaming as opposed to the more classic mp3 player music library mode. However, software freedom activist Richard Stallman calls it a “trap.”

Music streaming services require internet data, and therefore can cost money. With the rise of the iPod, and the consequent downloading of music, music began to become easily obtained for free. This caused the music industry to lose money – despite still of course remaining massively profitable.
Encouraging smartphone users to abandon their iPods and personal music libraries in favour of streaming music introduces more money back into the music industry.
And music streaming services have been shown to be incredibly profitable. The most commonly used streaming services include Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play Music, with Spotify’s revenue topping $1.1 billion US in 2014.
Surveys proved however that large proportion of people were likely to choose not to use streaming services for their music. A survey published by Nielson showed that 46 percent of people consider music streaming services “too expensive,” and 78 percent said they were “somewhat/very unlikely” to pay for a streaming service.
The idea of classic iPod repairs began with music lovers refitting their old iPods. But now it seems it could turn into a business in itself, with numbers of people shown to be interested in maintaining their old iPods rather than paying for expensive music streaming.
