i Phone Repairs: What To Do When Your iPhone Has Water Damage
Got your iPhone wet? Eek! But don’t worry – you may not need an i Phone repair just yet!
The kind folks over at Macworld have made a helpful video with a nifty little trick for reducing water damage in iPhones.
Its pretty ingenious really – instead of the tupperware full of rice solution, macworld suggests instead using silica gel.
What’s silica gel? It’s not as hard to find as you might think– in fact its something that’s fairly common and easy to find.
Silica gel is used when shipping electronic devices, to ensure no moisture damage occurs to the products during shipping.
When you get your iPhone wet, you’re going to want to find some of these straight away. And the best place to find them in a squeeze might surprise you – handbag shops!
As David from Macworld notes, nearly every handbag in any handbag shop will have a little bag of silica gel somewhere inside it, usually tucked away in a pocket somewhere.
If you ask the shop assistants they’re unlikely to mind as they are only needed for shipping. Most handbag shops are likely to be fine with you taking a few.
Try to fill up a Tupperware container with as many of the little bags of silica gel as you can – the more the better.
Once you’ve filled up your container with as many silica gel bags as you can muster, close the lid and leave it closed for at least 48 hours. Don’t be tempted to open it up and check how the iPhone is doing, as this could impair the process.
Once the 48 hours is up, put the iPhone on charge and see if you can power it up and get it running. If it does turn on, congratulations – you may have successfully dodged the cost of pricy i phone repairs! But keep an eye on it, as often people can find that after a few months the internal water damage has ruined the hardware beyond further use, even though it initially seems to work okay.
