Apple Repair Centre And Their Out Of Warranty Replacement Service:
Is it worth it, or are you better off getting your old iPhone repaired?
In terms of getting your iPhone repaired at an Apple repair centre, there are some options that won’t necessarily break the bank.
In part 1 of this article, we examined the AppleCare + program and whether or not it was a worthwhile purchase.
While AppleCare + has the potential to save iPhone purchasers money further down the line, there are other ways iPhone owners can save money on iPhone repairs.
If you think it unlikely that your iPhone will last two years without incurring any sort of damage whatsoever, it could be better for you to skip buying AppleCare +.
If you do choose to forgo AppleCare +, but find yourself with an iPhone damaged beyond repair, Apple offer a pretty good replacement service. Officially, Apple calls it a “Out of Warranty service.” The deal is that they take your broken iPhone and give you a new one in store.
Out of Warranty iPhone replacement services prices
Cost is determined by iPhone type:
- iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c – $269
- iPhone 4S – $199
- iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, Original iPhone – $149
All in all, pretty decent prices – about the same you might be paying for a repair outside the Apple repair centre.
Call in replacement service
If you don’t personally go in to the Apple repair centre and call in your replacement service instead, you will have to pay a shipping fee, and allow for a few days shipping time for your replacement. If you need your new iPhone faster than that, you can pay an extra $29 for an express replacement service.
If you need your new iPhone faster than that, you can pay an extra $29 for an express replacement service.
The additional $29 fee covers not only a post in service, but they also send you your replacement iPhone before you send yours away. If you’re one of those people who needs their iPhone pretty urgently for work, this service is pretty great, though it would cost you a few extra bucks.
There are of course some limits to this service. If Apple finds your iPhone is in multiple pieces or has had unauthorized modifications, they will charge you an additional fee. You will also be made to pay an extra fee if you fail to send your iPhone in or send it in late.
What damages does the out of warranty iPhone service cover?
The Out of Warranty iPhone service covers all damage – including broken screens and water damage.
As far as cost of repairs goes, this service isn’t bad considering you get an entirely new phone. Of course with a little hunting round you’re likely to find repairs at independent repair specialists for a much better price – but this is for isolated damages like cracked screens. If your iPhone is badly damaged and close to unusable, Apple’s Out of Warranty iPhone service might be the best way to go.
